It might feel like a way to make you stand out, but anything unrelated to the role is a waste of valuable space.A personal statement should consciously try and answer the following questions: who you are, what you can offer, and what you aim for in your career. How to write a personal statement Personal statement: Dos and donts Personal statement examplesEducationEducation should generally be the focus of a Graduate CV. Write in reverse-chronological order, with the most recent events coming at the top.Include your degree classification, A level/IB results and any other higher education diplomas. In direct terms, particular course modules youâve undertaken may be relevant to a role or scheme youâre applying for and should be us ed to demonstrate your wider knowledge of the subject. When it comes to GCSEs, stating the number and general grades is fine, although most employers will ask for specific grades when it comes to Maths and English. Which parts of my education should I include in my CV? Hobbies InterestsA Hobbies and Interests section is optional. If theyâre particularly individual, or actually back up your motives for applying for this role, then they should be included.Ask yourself: Will they help you get the job? Socialising with friends and going to the cinema, for example, will probably be of little interest to the employer. Finally, make sure youâre happy to expand upon them during your interview if called upon. Should I include hobbies and interests in my CV? Employment historyChances are, you may not have that much previous work history to include here, and if you do it may not all be relevant. If this is the case, feel free to be brief. After stating your dates of employment, company n ame and job title, putting a few top line duties and achievements will generally suffice. However, wherever possible, try and demonstrate your success in practical ways. Not only will they help quantify your output, they will also help validate your awareness of meeting targets/key responsibilities. How to get work experience How to find a new job I need a job: Where do I start? Writing Tools, Part 1 - Why Authors Need iPads - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Writing Tools, Part 1 - Why Authors Need iPads - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career An Apple iPad can make a major contribution to your writing and marketing success, whether youre a self-employed professional writing a book to build your brand or an entrepreneur creating social media content to market your small business. I can understand, though, if you think Ive overstated the benefits of writing and marketing with an iPad. Confession: I was originally skeptical about using an iPad for writing and marketing. I doubted that an iPad would quickly become a significant part of my daily writing and social media marketing. As a result, when I received one as a birthday gift, I viewed it as something else to complicate my life! I never expected it how much it would actually simplify my life and save a lot of time. Here are the top reasons I recommend iPads to authors and small business marketers: 1. Planning before you write Whether youre writing a book to build your personal brand or blog and newsletter content for small business marketing, its essential that you plan before you write. An iPad makes it possible to work anywhere, planning articles, blog posts, books, and book proposals before starting to write. Numerous mind mapping applications are available for iPads. You can begin to create your books table of contents or marketing plan anywhere using one of the dozens of free, or low-cost, mind mapping apps like MindManager or Mindo. Mind mapping on an iPad improves your writing and helps you get more done in less time because: The success of any writing project is determined before you start to write. Writing proceeds smoother and faster after you clarify your goals, identify the ideas youre going to include, and create a structure, or framework, for your project. Time spent planning before writing means less time writing! You can get a lot done in just a few minutes. Mind mapping on the iPad means your work is always with you, permitting you to productively use a few minutes between meetings, during a short break, or in bed before you fall asleep. Planning doesnt require a lot of typing. I was originally concerned about using the iPads virtual keyboard the keyboard appears on the iPads touch screen. What I didnt take realize, however, was how you dont need a lot of words to create a valuable mind map; the value of a mind map is in the quality and quantity of the ideas you include and your skill in organizing them in the right order. Mind maps are intended to be exported and shared. Mind maps are not islands. Theyre intended to be shared with others and exported to the software on your primary computer for completion, editing, and formatting. Your writing efficiency escalates once you break yourself of the trap of thinking that writing with an iPad means writing every word on your iPad! 2. Project time management Project and time management is the elephant in the room for many authors. Authors tend to focus on the quality of their ideas, and their ability to express them, rather than improving their ability to write their book and marketing content efficiently and on time. Progress rarely occurs without deadlines, priorities, and schedules. Intention, alone, is not enough to get your books and marketing content finished on time. There are simply too many other obligations and demands competing for your time. Mind maps make it easy to break big projects, like books, into a series of relatively simple writing, self-publishing, and social marketing tasks. Several mind mapping applications for the iPad let you add start dates and deadlines to topics and subtopics. This means you can give yourself deadlines for the various tasks necessary to your writing and social media marketing success. You can also add icons a type of visual shorthand to delegate responsibilities and track progress. After creating an action plan mind maps on your iPad, you can export it to your primary computer for refinements, share your map with co-authors, editors, and marketing partners, and sync it with your online calendar. 3. Social media The work everywhere advantages an iPad offers helps me do a better job of keeping up to date with the blog posts by the writing, marketing, and design experts I follow. Its also made it easier to update my social media presence: Individual bloggers. Using Feeddler RSS, Ive been able to organize the the bloggers I follow into a few major categories. Im now doing a better job of keeping up to date than when I had to be at my computer to do the same thing. Media feeds. In a similar way, I find that apps like Flipboard, Huff Post, and TED are ideal for tracking graphically rich publications and major media. Separating individual from major media sources has helped me do a better job of following both sources. Social media updates. Being able to work anywhere with an iPad has also made it easier to respond to Facebook and LinkedIn invitations. Its also made it easier to schedule social media topics, plan blog posts before writing them, and schedule my Twitter updates. 4. The iPad reading experience If youre planning to write and distribute ebooks, marketing materials, and white papers on mobile platforms and ebook readers, its essential that you gain first-hand experience reading on an iPad. Reading on an iPad will open your eyes to the importance ,of graphic design and the role it plays making your message as engaging and easy to read as possible. Downloading and reading books, white papers, and reports at sites like Scribd and Issuu.com will make you more aware of how design and layout can work either for you, or against you. Book covers. Viewing the front covers of ebooks youve downloaded in the bookcase view of your iBooks app, will drive home the importance of how even at thumbnail size your book cover must compete with the covers of other books. Inside page design. Reading the inner pages on your iPad will emphasize that design tools like color, layout, type, and white space as necessaties, rather than luxuries. 5. Presenting with an iPad Speaking and presenting play a big role in any author or business owners success. Authors typically speak and present about their book, helping promote their book while writing it. Although you may not want to creating presentation visuals on your iPad, youll appreciate presenting from your iPad 2 hooked up to a video projector. (Owners of the original iPad can purchase an adapter to connect to a video projector.) You can upload presentations as PDF files to your iPads, or you can use presentation apps like Apples Keynote to import, edit, and present PowerPoint files. You can also use apps like Office2 HD to edit and present PowerPoint files (as well as edit and update word-processed documents and spreadsheet files). Living with an iPad In part 2 of this series, Living with an iPad, Ill describe some of the ways that iPads are easier to live with than laptops and desktop computers. Its not just that the iPad is smaller, lighter, and less expensive than many laptops; there are many usability advantages built into the iPads operating system. Please share your experiences planning and writing books and small business marketing content on an iPad, as well as your recommendations for iPad apps. Share your experiences as comments, below! Interview with Filebite co-founder and entrepreneur Sunil Singh
Interview with Filebite co-founder and entrepreneur Sunil Singh Filebite is a social storage platform used for the organisation and management of your files in a privatized and secure cloud. Whether you are a professional, small business or a student, Filebite offers a social and practical service to suit your file needs all based under a stylish and easy to use interface. And I was lucky enough to get a written interview with Sunil Mark Singh, co-founder of Filebite. Faizan (Interviewer): When did you come up with the idea of Filebite, how did it come about? Did you think about it while you were at university? What was your main goal in setting about realising the idea of Filebite? Sunil: We came up with the idea of Filebite at university; both Jason (co-founder) and I were doing our dissertations at the time. I studied how social media can affect business performance and he studied cloud security, both of these topics provided a base to what Filebite should incorporate. We wanted a system that would benefit the user through communication and collaboration but remain simple and practical. Faizan: How did you go about executing your idea? Do/did you manage university and work for Filebite at the same time? Were there any sacrifices you had to make in order to make your idea a reality? Or did you work on Filebite after university? Did you try for a job or was Filebite your absolute goal? Sunil: We spent our time at university researching our market, so when we left we could focus on making it a reality. We knew we had to make sacrifices; we had to work our nights and weekends to really make it happen. Its not an easy lifestyle, but you look at it as an investment to your future. This is also why helping start-ups and young people is important to us, so they know that you dont always have to follow the rule book. No, university didnt help us. We learnt a lot at Bournemouth university but I think the time was right to explore avenues outside. Faizan: Who funded your idea and did you approach many? Did your university help you in executing your project, is it privately funded or is it self-funded? How did they help? Share the best advice you got in establishing Filebite. Sunil: We funded Filebite from our savings. There is no external help financially. We believe that we can do this ourselves and are not afraid of learning from our mistakes. If someone decides to come and help, then we will always put the businesss best interests first. At the end of the day, we are the ones who run it. The biggest tool we had to get Filebite going was our mind-set. If you want something, you go and get it. If you dont quite get there, change your path and try again. It is a challenge and that is what is exciting about it. I think if you focus and set your mind to something, then you can do anything. That would be the best advice to get started. Faizan: What do you think of Universities at the moment? Are they encouraging entrepreneurs or are students being put off by the university burden? Do you think students are motivated enough to realise the ideas they have? Sunil: To be honest, I do feel they could do more. I think it is expected for their students to go into jobs to hep build their connections. We both did placements and the Uni was extremely supportive. However, always wanting to do my own thing, I believe that side wasnt given enough encouragement, especially after I left. I think you get so sucked into completing work for your classes, its difficult to go into the unknown and try and do it yourself. At university, you have that time to really stimulate ideas, it doesnt mean you have to give up the student lifestyle, it just means you have to be organised. Students have so many great ideas and we would love to see more of them starting their own businesses after university. We realise it is hard, so if their was some kind of mentoring support, that would be a really positive thing , especially for the UK. That is something that we would love to do as we establish ourselves. Filebite User Interface of Career Geek Blog Faizan: How is Filebite different from other cloud services and is it aimed at todayâs social network and social sharing graduates and students? Sunil: We want to make Filebite not just about file-storage, we want to combine a number of features such as simplicity, practicality and sociability to provide an overall experience. The UK cloud is underdeveloped and we want to put us back on the map with a tech platform. We adopted a simpler is better mantra to make sure people understand. However, we are constantly listening to feedback and looking to improve it to make it better. The market moves pretty quickly so we just have to make sure we keep on top of it. At the minute we are looking at small businesses and developing something appealing for them as our target audience. However, as we have a free side, we would encourage students to sign up and use us when sharing work. When we were doing our dissertations I used email. It was boring and tedious. I think Filebite can combat this issue and make sharing work docs a bit more interesting. Due to automatically sorting your files into categories and allowing multiple versions of the same file can help to organise your work. Faizan: What are your aspirations for the future with regards to Filebite? How are you planning on expanding/developing/getting a wider audience? Sunil: We are looking at taking Filebite to the next level with a more professional and simpler user interface. We feel we have a good understanding of what we can do to make it a success after receiving feedback. It will take a lot of work and effort, but then again that is part of the challenge. The site is monetised through packages, so money we get will get put back into the company to improve it and focus on other marketing techniques that cost a bit more than our current budget. Hopefully it will be worth it. Onwards and upwards. Faizan: Thanks for the interview, Sunil. Good luck with carrying Filebite forward and I am sure this interview will help other graduates strongly look into entrepreneurship. 1
